Art Links I Like
- Daryl Cagle's Professional Cartoonists Index! is a feast of editorial/political cartoons by some of the best in the business, and updated regularly.
- Plein Air Painters of America (P.A.P.A.) features brief bios and samples of several accomplished painters who paint on the spot, outdoors. I list my reviews of some of them, below.
- A lifetime of color. This site gives excellent, brief explanations of design principles with helpful illustrations. Great for beginners (especially children) and a useful review for advanced artists.
- Charles Sovek paints in a simplified, colorful, energized style all his own. A teacher and author, his site includes a bounty of instruction and advice for artists at all levels.
- Stephen C. Datz is an excellent plein air landscape painter who typically works on a small scale.
- The website of Susan Lyon and Scott Burdick features two relatively young but very accomplished painters. Their site is packed with studio and plein air paintings. You get the feeling that these two just love to paint. It takes a good while to view all their paintings, but it's a pleasure.
- John Budicin is an expert plein air painter from California, who paints both landscapes and cityscapes. His site includes large images of his small paintings; it's a treat to see the free and loose brushwork, which translates into a kind of simplified realism. Well worth studying.
- Matt Smith has an incredibly accurate eye for color in his realistic, yet loosely painted, landscapes.
- William Elston is a multi-talented Northwest (Seattle, Washington) realist painter of the urban scene who often works large scale.
- A New York painter, Ben Moore suffuses realistic subject matter with flat patterns.
- Camille Przewodek is a plein air painter, with a fine sense of color and composition.
- Ian Roberts is yet another small scale plein air painter, whose paintings look effortless, with free brushwork and snapshot realism.
- Patricia Bourque is an accomplished acrylic painter in a highly realistic style, exploring a variety of subjects.
- Merlin Enabnit was an expressive, bold palette knife painter later in life. He also created pin-up girly paintings for WWII soldiers to ogle and admire. In high school I studied his Walter Foster books, amazed at the color and freedom of his palette knife landscape paintings. I met him in Arizona shortly before his death, delighted to see many of his paintings in his home.
- The Artists Magazine website is filled with features and tips.
- Painting, from "About the Internet," is a gateway site with links to many useful painting related sites.
- The Painter's Keys by Robert Genn -- you can subscribe to Genn's twice weekly inspirational art letter. It's free.
- Dick Blick - Art Supplies Funny name, but lots of supplies. Shop online or order a catalog.
- ArtMedia, (503)223-3724, an excellent local art store near the downtown library (902 SW Yamhill, Portland, Oregon), with branches also in Clackamas and Beaverton. A 20% off sale at the beginning of every school term is an incentive to shop at Art Media. (I'm only a customer and this is an unsolicited plug.)
- Columbia Art & Drafting Supply (503)232-2216, at 1505 E. Burnside, Portland, Oregon, has perhaps more materials to choose from than Art Media, and the parking is easier. The employees will almost bug you with helpfulness. Both Art Media and Columbia are great places to browse and educate yourself about what's available in supplies -- or to gift shop.
- I've Been Framed (503) 775-2651, 4950 SE Foster Rd Portland, OR. No website I can find, but a wide variety of frames and art supplies at discounted prices. An elderly, cheerful owner will help you find what you need. He's had the business for 40 years and knows his stuff.
- Build your own web site from scratch. I built mine after completing a free 23 lesson online course, Writing HTML. Another site which will help you is HTML Goodies, by Joe Burns, who sprinkles humor throughout his easy-to-understand instructions. I'd also recommend his book by the same name, HTML Goodies.
- Broken Art Gallery The Healing Art of Creativity: combating chronic stress and depression. by Brett Curtis Weber, Ph.D.
- Zeug, "an eclectic mercantile." In German, "zeug" means simply, "stuff." Shawn Wright is the owner of this simple but delightful shop, a great place to find unique gifts in Portland, Oregon.
